Competition Categories

  • Local History (3-5 pages in Arial 12 point font, 1.5 spacing, or about 1000-1500 words, or 5-10 minutes of audio or video). Introduce the history of the Church in a particular locale such as a town or region, or in a particular place such as a building or sacred site. How long has it existed? What has life been like for members over the years? If available, pictures are welcome. How does the story of this place speak to the Competition theme? Include notes and a bibliography.
  • Personal Narrative (3-5 pages in Arial 12 point font, 1.5 spacing, or about 1000-1500 words, or 5-10 minutes of recording). Tell a nonfiction story from the history of the Latter-day Saints that has a personal connection to you. It can be about an individual, family, event, tradition, journey, building, or other topic. Explain how this story exemplifies  the Competition theme. Include a bibliography.
  • Student Research Paper (7-12 pages in Arial 12 point font, 1.5 spacing, or about 2700-4500 words). Use secondary scholarship and primary sources to tell a story from Latter-day Saint history with historical significance that relates to the Competition theme. Include notes and a bibliography. Must be an enrolled university or secondary school student or have graduated from a university or secondary institution within the past two years.
  • Academic Research Article (5000-8000 words). Build on existing scholarship and your own original research and thinking to shed new light on an aspect of Church history in your region that relates to the Competition theme. Include notes and a bibliography.
