Alvin Smith died unexpectedly in November 1823. The family laid his body to rest in the Swift Burying Ground, just north of Union Church House, a nondenominational chapel in Palmyra.

Young Joseph Smith Jr. looked up to his eldest brother as a mentor and friend. Alvin helped earn the money for the mortgage on the farm and began building the Smiths’ second home. His death at age 25 was a major blow emotionally and economically. Because Alvin was never baptized, his family worried for years about the welfare of his soul. These fears later subsided when the Lord revealed provisions for those who die without a knowledge of the gospel (see D&C 137:1–6).

The Village of Palmyra manages the General John Swift Memorial Cemetery, which is open to visitors.
