Martin’s Cove did not play a large role in most pioneers’ migration to the western United States. However, it was an important place for the Martin handcart company and their rescuers. In 1856, members of the Martin company sought shelter from winter storms here, staying from November 4–9 while waiting for the storms to pass. A number of the company died and were buried here. When the company left Martin’s Cove on November 9, most of the handcarts were left behind.

Today Martin’s Cove is on public land that is leased to the Church and managed jointly by the Church and the Bureau of Land Management. A walking trail creates a loop that is 2.3 miles long (3.7 kilometers) around the eastern portion of the cove. Visitors are encouraged to protect the fragile environment and maintain quiet reverence in the area.
