While on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Wheatley walked among humble houses like this one he painted—with flaking paint and a tin roof. It is in this house, however, where Wheatley and his companion taught the family with whom he felt most strongly the Spirit of the Lord. This experience taught him that God’s love is for everyone, regardless of circumstance.
