"The young woman on the right is encouraging the young woman on the left to arise and spread the light of the gospel by lighting the woman's candle with her own. The woman on the left symbolizes those who are converting to the gospel or who have not yet “risen.” The woman on the right symbolizes those who choose to be a standard for the nations. She is spreading her "light" by lighting other candles. She is gently lifting the other woman’s face, a gesture suggesting that she arise and shine forth as well, and that everything will be okay when she follows the teachings of the gospel. The gentle nature of the painting expresses the peace and comfort the gospel has to offer."
