"The work is about us, as Latter-day Saints, following the example of King Benjamin and his people as we choose to pitch our tents toward the temple. The work serves as both a warning and a reminder to “arise and shine forth” by making this choice. The cityscape symbolizes the wickedness and pride of the world. It is overshadowed by a dark cloud, which symbolizes the wrath of God (see D&C 115:6). The tent represents us as we try to choose the right. The campfire is our testimonies and the Light of Christ. The rendition of the Oakland California Temple represents exaltation—the completion of a journey that is uphill and therefore difficult. The temple becomes a standard to the nations because of its position on the mountain."
