“This project began with my childhood set of scriptures, which, after years of use, were falling apart,” said Hatch. Interested in the way “spiritual belief and impressions are converted into day-to-day temporal life,” Hatch’s work captures the way faith becomes imprinted, in tangible ways, into the fabric of our lives.
The “I Was a Stranger” campaign also inspired Hatch to work with refugee’ populations and to also begin researching early Latter-day Saint refugees, who crossed landscapes and borders for their beliefs. The title of the piece is taken from a poem by Adrienne Rich that says, “This is the place. And I am here . . .”
