Paget’s painting depicts the Fall and the Atonement— while one set humanity on the path of mortality and death, the other offered eternal life and salvation to all. The conjoining circles behind the figures Paget describes as a symbol of “two becoming one, [creating] a new shape in the middle called the vesica piscis, a symbol of Christ.”
Similarly, the Star of David stands as a symbol between the two. “And this is mine everlasting covenant, that when thy posterity shall embrace the truth, and look upward, then shall Zion look downward, and all the heavens shall shake with gladness, and the earth shall tremble with joy” (Joseph Smith Translation, Genesis 9:22).
