Ashcroft’s painting Born to Carry the King of Kings highlights the humility of the donkey in contrast with the grandness of Jesus Christ, who, on Palm Sunday, was carried into Jerusalem on its back. The looseness of the strokes and downturned gaze casts a sense of awareness onto the animal, who bows and kneels.

“I like the symbolism of Christ riding the humble donkey,” said the artist. “He was coming in peace, to fulfill the will of the Father. He entered riding a donkey, a symbol of peace.”
