Alluding to the miracle from early Utah history, Hearty said, “The seagull stands in as a metaphor for the Messiah.” His outstretched wings mirror that of the Savior on the cross, and the cricket stands as a metaphor for “victory over death.” Additionally, for Hearty, the two insects stand as symbols for human nature: the bee representing “the better part of our nature, prone to cooperation” and the cricket being “concerned only with consumption.” Additionally, the icosahedron, in the center, “reoccurs as a symbol of idealism, perfection, and divinity” and is suspended from two nails hanging from red string, referencing the Atonement.
