“Isaiah called Christ a ‘man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief’ (Isaiah 53:3). Our human experience is punctuated by grief and by pain. The sorrow and toil of Adam has always been unto death,” said the artist. Capturing this sorrow and mortality, Sherwood depicted Christ “as material, as physical, as mortal, as I could.” Yet, within His mortal being, He was also the Son of God—one who could break the bonds of death and could heal the wounds of mortality. “We are heirs to this hope, ‘if so be that we suffer with him’ (Romans 8:17).”
