Merrell’s Lego sculpture uses blue bricks to spell the word glory four times in Arabic, written in a geometric Kufic script found on many medieval mosques. For Merrell, the work depicts the ultimate goal of life—“immortality and eternal life, or God’s glory.” “Similar to mandalas used in Hindu and Buddhist traditions or labyrinths in Christian traditions,” said Merrell, “the design allows one to trace the blue and white lines in a circular [and meditative] fashion” while contemplating the “glory of the heavens (مجدالسماوي)."
