Depicting a newly baptized young girl, the painting captures her surrounded by lilies and symbolizing “innocence, purity, obedience, and faith in Jesus Christ,” said Reilly. Symbolism constructs meaning through the painting: the arched frame references the gate we must all enter at baptism, the light behind the figure captures “the enlightenment we gain through revelation,” and the butterflies represent the spiritual transformation and rebirth” we experience at baptism.
