“Line upon line, layer by layer, the strata of rock formations record an ancient history of creation,” said Preece. “Geology tells a story: of abundance and famine, of flood and drought, of creation and destruction. Line upon line, and precept upon precept, we acquire wisdom, [layers of learning,] adding to our experiences and perceptions.” The work is inspired by the rock formations of southern Utah that compressed, sliced, and folded pigmented clay to form marbling that opens, closes, and at times cracks.
