“Ruth is often . . . portrayed as gleaning in Boaz’s field or caring for Naomi,” said Candari, which illustrates “her virtues of strength, determination, commitment, ingenuity, and faith.” But here Candari’s portrait “aimed to capture these attributes without the context of the biblical narrative,” explained the artist. Ruth is a biblical legacy, but such narratives often forget her “youthful hope and beauty.”
