This monochromatic painting, made from built-up earth and gold tones, depicts the captivity and deliverance of the children of Israel from Egypt and explores “the infinite love of the Lord,” who provided “a great prophet like Moses, through whom He performed great wonders and miracles,” said Rhodes. In creating the texture and imagery for her work, Rhodes builds up the surface, then reduces it back again. “In the creative process appear tones and shapes,” she explained. “I take out and incorporate those that I feel. Thus arises, from the sum of the lost spoils, the final work.”
