Touching The Hearts Of Many Generations

Kimono silk, obi silk, cotton, organdy, silk thread, gold thread, and heat-bondable fiber.

gratiThis quilt was made from a damaged antique kimono worn by three generations of women at their wedding ceremonies— gifted to the artist by a close friend—and is bound in silk from a kimono obi the artist inherited from her mother. The quilt honors the women—their lives and tribulations—and, Covington said, is an “expression of the happiness I feel about the eternal family the temple makes possible.”

“The dots represent the spirits of [Covington’s] ancestors” and the eternal links that connect generations of the Lord’s children. The chrysanthemum, a symbolic flower of Japan, represents beauty. “The insects nestled among the flower’s petals represent [our] mortal existence . . . protected by our ancestors’ blessings,” said Covington.
