“I am attracted to stitchery samplers as a traditional art form combining words and pictures. In my work, the first verse of the hymn shows Nauvoo the Beautiful with grain in the fields, fruit trees, and flowers. The second verse shows Devil’s Gate and the Sweetwater River, where the Martin and Willie Handcart Companies got into trouble. I use ‘barrier stitches’ and ‘thistle stitches’ here. Mormon motifs such as beehives and covered wagons decorate the words of the third verse. A picture of seagulls and crickets makes a transition into the last verse of the song, reminding me that miracles did happen to help the Saints. The final picture is the Salt Lake Temple, the Assembly Hall, the Tabernacle, the Lion House, and the Beehive House, with the Wasatch Mountains behind. This depicts the ‘Mountain of the Lord’s House’ in the last days.”
