“Emblems is a kind of self-portrait in still-life form. I am a still-life painter, and the subjects I choose to paint are nearly always drawn from my home, the trees in my yard, rocks, and treasures my daughters bring me—objects I own that I find compelling. Emblems is a painting of a collection of personal possessions, but the objects portrayed actually only represent things that are dearer to me than the objects themselves. I have in mind things such as family, love, heritage, culture, love of God, appreciation of history, and admiration of nature’s beauty and bounty.”
