“For as long as I’ve been painting spiritual subject matter, I’ve wanted to paint my impressions of Joseph Smith’s First Vision. I chose a more naturalistic approach than the more common idealized interpretation. Gathering his youthful, farm-boy appearance was critical to me. I chose to give him a less grand appearance because I wanted to show the truth about his simple, humble background. Most important, I wanted to capture the power and emotion of Joseph’s experience.”
