“As I worked on this project, I increasingly became convinced how much Hyrum must have loved and admired Jerusha. I tried to express this love and admiration, going beyond her personality, which I have come to believe was marked by strength, sensitivity, and intelligence. Coming through extremely trying experiences several times without becoming bitter must have molded Jerusha into a being who signified real womanhood. This painting, therefore, is intended to be about womanhood and my understanding of Jerusha Barden Smith.”
