“The Kirkwoods were part of the ill-fated Willie Handcart Company. James, 11, was left in charge of his brother Joseph, 4. In late October, they ascended Rocky Ridge. Everyone had had almost nothing to eat for days. It was snowing. They walked all day, and Joseph’s shoes wore out. His feet were numb, and he fell down, unable to move, so James picked him up. They fell behind the main group, but James never gave up. In 27 hours, the company traveled 15 miles. When the boys finally arrived at camp, James gently sat his little brother down, then, not saying a word, collapsed and died, having given all for his brother and the Lord. I knew I had to paint this story. This story and other pioneer stories need to be remembered and honored. They are more than facts; they are sacred testimonies of God’s covenant people, whose spirit of faith surpasses natural strength.”
