“This bas-relief is a combination of colored Indian slate, marble, and bronze. It represents the first sighting of the tree of life by Lehi. The sculpture is turned diagonally to represent the cardinal points of the compass: north, south, east, and west. This orientation suggests that the vision is for all the world. The leaves represent ‘the true vine,’ a symbol of Jesus Christ. The iron rod guides us toward the tree. The circle, with Lehi’s words, represents the eternal promise given in the vision. The tree has a corded, thick trunk that gets nourishment from its roots, representing unity, self-sustaining strength, and stability. The burnished leaves represent the glow of light and truth, while the burnished fruit represents the pure love of God through the sacrifice of His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ.”
