“Motherhood has been a theme of artists in every culture because the power of the images of maternity is based in their universality. This universality is symbolized in my work on the left by Giotto’s Escape of the Sacred Family to Egypt, on the right by Picasso’s Mother with Child, and in the middle by a contemporary mother with child. I have tried to show the nobility of motherhood through depicted interactions of mothers and children in three art periods, showing protection, comfort, love, and eternal values, all factors that make motherhood one of the noblest causes and callings in the world.”
