“The Prophet so loved the restored gospel of Jesus Christ that when he was persecuted, he did not deny his testimony. June 27, 1844, is a day of tears and broken hearts for the Latter-day Saints. My work depicts the martyrdom at the Carthage Jail. Hyrum Smith lies dead. Joseph Smith was killed as he ran toward the window. John Taylor, at bottom left, was severely wounded, but Willard Richards remained unharmed. Later, more trials came for the Saints when they were cruelly driven from Nauvoo in winter. Many lost their lives on this journey. Here, a man humbly prays for the faithful Saints. At this time, a hymn of courage was born—“Come, Come Ye Saints.” Those Saints received joy and peace, a reward for their sacrifice and obedience.”
