“The pure white iris, sometimes called the ‘poor man’s orchid’ suggests hope to me, and I am here likening it to the thirteenth article of faith. My poor immigrant Chinese father was seeking things ‘virtuous, lovely, or of good report, or praiseworthy’ to teach his children, the virtues he had long held dear. The message the missionaries brought to him in this foreign land was gold to our family. Our entire family of ten first-generation Chinese continues to blossom and seeks for virtue and hope through the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
