“In February 1846, Charles Shumway, portrayed in this sculpture, crossed the Mississippi River and accompanied the forced evacuation of Mormon people from Nauvoo across Iowa to Winter Quarters. The trail was snowy, wet, cold, and muddy. The horses and oxen sank up to their bellies. Wagons were unloaded and then reloaded time and again. The pioneers had to double and triple the teams on their wagons to pull the wagons free. At times, a day’s progress was measured in feet not miles. Out of the travail of the Iowa crossing, William Clayton wrote the hymn ‘Come Come Ye Saints.’ ”
