Our Heritage of Faith

This exhibition of the Seventh International Art Competition: Our Heritage of Faith, held in 2006, shows that the restored gospel of Jesus Christ transcends geographical location and cultural background. Here are heartfelt expressions that affirm life, reveal the love of God and the Savior, and honor the heritage of faith shared by Latter-day Saints everywhere.

The Sacred Gift

Lesa Breinholt Udall
This abstract creation with its variety of symbols illustrates one of the most significant events to occur as part of the plan for our eternal progression: the First Vision. The Prophet Joseph Smith, one of the main subjects of the painting, is represented as a red sphere. The elevated checkerboard depicts the spiritual state of mind as he receives sacred revelation. Light and dark squares represent the desire to know more from God and the conflict with the power of Satan. The symbols, however, have more than one meaning. For example, the trees surrounding Joseph not only portray the Sacred Grove, but also the approximate date of the First Vision.
