"I believe in personal revelation and a personal relationship with the Divine. I wanted to portray the moment of communion in a general way so that it could stand for any place in the world and the viewer could put herself or himself into the situation in the painting. The figures float slightly above the earth, and their features are intentionally vague. I am interested in portraying Christ as empathetic and yet strong, and the woman could be thought of as being in an active gesture of supplication or explanation."
