"Quietly they stand back to back—Mary and Martha, two sisters. When Christ visited their home, Mary 'sat at Jesus’s feet and heard his word,'while Martha was 'cumbered about much serving' (Luke 10:39–40). This sculpture is about Mary and Martha that exists within each of us and the challenge of meeting both the physical demands and the spiritual pursuits of life. We are here to learn to balance our day-to-day responsibilities. Her arms full of scriptures, Mary’s gaze is directed upward, representing dedication to spiritual interests. She appears to be ascending. Barefooted, Martha looks downward, focused on the earth. Her arms bear the responsibility of caring for those around her. To be complete, to be whole, both qualities are essential, and both are noble. It is our responsibility to remember the great things of God and choose 'that good part'” (Luke 10:42).
