"Jesus said, 'I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live' (John 11:25). Since ancient times the butterfly has been a symbol of the resurrection. Making this relief-carved vessel represents for me a rebirth of hope and lost dreams. It was created when I was attempting to return to my artwork after a long period of disillusionment, darkness, and personal grief. The creation of this work was a step back into the light. I also found comfort in the words of Robert Browning: “I will wake, and remember, and understand” (“Evelyn Hope”). I placed these words around the vessel’s rim. I know that after my death and resurrection and my return to my Heavenly Father, the reasons for many of the trials I have faced in my life will finally become clear to me."
