“A gentle and still spirit is precious to God,” said Chao, who depicts a bird in prayer as a metaphor for her mothering. The grapes and grapevine symbolize Chao’s willingness to constantly nourish her life with the love of Jesus Christ, who said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. . . . If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you” (John 15:1, 7–8).
