When Jesus was baptized in the River Jordan, the heavens were opened and “he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: and lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:16–17). Being perfect, Christ was baptized not to wash away His sins but rather to fulfill the law that would allow Him, as the children’s song “Baptism” suggests, “to enter with my Father in the Kingdom up on high” ( Children’s Songbook, 101).
