The genre of still life has long been used as a metaphor for the fleetingness of mortal life and earthly things, as well as the reality of change. However, mortal realities, such as falling leaves, that remind us of death (called memento mori) contrast steeply with the sureties of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which allow for the corruptible to put on incorruption, and mortality to put on immortality. “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” (1 Corinthians 15:55).
