Just before the Crucifixion, the Savior endured scourging and mocking at the hands of Roman soldiers. “They clothed him with purple, and plaited a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, and began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!” (Mark 15:17–18). Through it all, the Savior did not retaliate. The purple cloth depicted in isolation stands as a symbol of Christ’s majesty and the extent to which He was mocked and persecuted.
