In the account of Mary and Martha from the New Testament, Martha received her Master temporally, while Mary received Him spiritually; Martha focused on many needful things, while Mary focused on the one needful thing. Ricks’s painting depicts Martha and Mary as two sides of the same person, capturing the duality found in all of us as we work to accomplish our everyday tasks and still make time to be spiritually fed. The painting seems to ask the viewer, “Am I choosing that good part?”
