Standing at the tomb with Martha and Mary, Jesus wept, mourning with them over the loss of their beloved brother. But their sorrow soon turned to joy, for Jesus cried in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth” (John 11:43). After four days in the grave, Lazarus rose from the dead. The door central in this painting captures the boundary between the world of the dead and the living—a state of transition where Lazarus heeded the voice of His Savior.
