This painting depicts the prodigal son trapped in a fog of pride, isolated in the tumult of a storm, and distanced from the peace and love of home. Caught in this divide, the son is captured at the moment of return, while yet a great way off. Christ’s parable of the prodigal son teaches that we are all in need of forgiveness and love: “For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found” (Luke 15:24).
