Highlights from the Second International Art Competition: Themes from the Scriptures exhibition held in 1991.

This painting depicts four Araucanian Indians of Chile in colorful native dress looking toward the horizon for hope of the good news of the gospel that will someday be given to them. Brother Riveros has used the strong forms and bold colors characteristic of Chilean regional art to express his concept which, as paint on canvas, is a medium more European in origin.

Amumn Petu, Go Ye Therefore

The Last Supper of Jesus Christ has been rendered by artists for many centuries. This expressionistic version drew inspiration from medieval sculpture and art found in northern Europe. The “Pottery Group of Bremen,” headed up by Ingetraut Riemer, was comprised of Reimer and five other German Latter-day Saint women—Gerlinde Gesell, Bridgette Horstel, Sieglende Nowak, Ilse Selvarajah, and Rosemarie Torche—who worked together to create this sculpture.

The Last Supper

This fine and intricate cloth applique portrait of Abraham depicts essential traits of his appearance and character. Information about Abraham’s life is found in the Bible: “Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel . . . I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it forever” (Exodus 32:13).

Abraham, Father of the Faithful

There is a record of the legendary navigation instrument, the Liahona, described in the Book of Mormon: "For just as surely as this director did bring our fathers, by following its course, to the promised land, shall the words of Christ, carry us beyond this vale of sorrow into a far better land of promise" (Alma 37:45). Artists have attempted to reproduce what the Liahona might have looked like, such as this example.

The Liahona

The artist has written how this work expresses his everyday experience. It shows a “farm family in their early conversion, striving to follow the teachings of the prophets, gradually changing old ways to better. [The image] tells us that they are giving thanks and hoping for the success of the day, and strength for tomorrow.”

The Family Prayer

Warren Luch had a long career as an artist and art director for various publications. He wrote: “The First Vision I wished to communicate and portray in this piece is the visual impact of the column of light interacting with the stillness of the wooded forest. Rather than trying to duplicate nature, I have tried to heighten the effect of light through a symbolic black and white approach.”

Warren Floyd Luch (1935– )

The First Vision

The artist said his work expresses the personal and sudden realization of the divine origin of mankind. The woman wears white robes of purity as she receives insights. This fleeting and quiet moment is symbolized here by the hummingbird image. Here, truth is indicated by a square rendered in red lines, suggesting that there are further spiritual realms.
