Out of the Rolling Ocean

Emily Erekson
Country
Born 1984, Utah; Residing New York
Medium
Intermedia installation for female voices
Out of 22 improvised voice compositions (all starting and ending on a D and lasting one to three minutes), Erekson created a beautifully diverse sound bank of voices. The individual voices revealed differences in the participants—some were more hesitant than others, some planned, some wanted a redo—making the sound bank wonderfully diverse. A sample audio clip from the composition is included here. In the installation at the Church History Museum, audience members may listen to the full composition and are invited to add their own voice to it.
"Out of the rolling ocean the crowd came a drop gently to me, . . . I too am part of that ocean, my love, we are not so much separated, Behold the great rondure, the cohesion of all, how perfect!"
