In biblical times, the ark of the covenant housed the tablets of stone Moses obtained on Mount Sinai. Its covering, called the mercy seat, was considered the earthly dwelling place of Jehovah or God. In de Melo’s painting, the ark of the covenant marks the place where God and humanity meet, with rich blue descending to connect with the ark, a grounded earthly symbol. For the artist, painting becomes a way to explore divine inspiration; creating is a way to honor the Creator.
“The Ark of the Covenant celebrates not only art as an individual expression but as an act of faith and devotion, a continuous offering to the mystery and beauty of celestial creation.”
