On the left, the biblical Jonah leans on the wall of a ship, his hand over his face as he tries to avoid God’s instructions. On the right, Jonah fights in the belly of a whale, his hand raised in frustration. Dobson wonders if, in times when individuals pursue their own faulty agendas, “[they] are faced with [their] own version of sea monsters throughout [their] journeys.” But God finds humanity wherever it goes and hopes that—as they did for Jonah—new circumstances open space for divine connection.
“While riding on the ribs of a whale, we come into a sacred space when our willingness to commune intersects with the understanding of a loving God.”
—Jacob E. Dobson
