To create this image of Jesus Christ, Cocco Santángelo was inspired by Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But Cocco Santángelo has changed the form; the figure is elongated, and the vertical rectangles behind give a sense of elevation. From the bottom of the piece to the top, the piece grows progressively lighter, indicating Christ’s ascension over death and sin.
“[Christ’s] arms, extended and with the notable marks of the crucifixion nails in His hands, are a welcoming and forgiving sign to all mankind.”
