While the Savior crouches in pain in the background, the viewer sees Peter and the sons of Zebedee in the foreground. They have come to support their friend and Master in His need, but they are tired and fall asleep. Vander Veur Matz offers empathy to these mortal friends: “They were imperfect, but they were trying.” As she ponders friends and neighbors with heavy burdens, she often feels her efforts to relieve their weight are insufficient. But she finds inspiration in Peter and the sons of Zebedee.
“I can’t remove the burdens from those I love, but I can do something—however imperfect—to support them, sit with them, and help them feel they are not alone.”
