Inspired by a story his father told him, Ekekepo paints two fisherman and their canoes. A storm has arrived, and one figure has fallen into the ocean. The painted sky feels threatening, and the waves push powerfully. However, the second figure reaches from his own canoe to rescue his friend from perilous waves. Canoes in coastal Ghana are often painted with inspirational sayings. In this work, the rescuer’s canoe is painted with the saying “God is good,” reminding the viewer that God often offers assistance through a neighbor’s hands.
“Whenever we pay attention, we figure out people whose hands hang down.”
