An imagined wartime story was often repeated in the 1970s of two United States servicemen who fought in World War II. The narrator explains that both soldiers were wounded, and one gave the other a blessing, commanding him to live. The story continued that both men later recovered in a military hospital. Fictional tales of heroics instructed Latter-day Saint youth in the 1970s to think of God and service when situations feel dire. Price has recreated this scene; the wounded soldier appears strong and confident, with one hand on his companion’s head, despite his other arm, which hangs limp by his side.
“[This story] has inspired me . . . to demonstrate how one marine lifted up the hands that hung down.”
