Parkinson paints her sister and niece in the days before her sister passed away from cancer. The daughter holds her mother, one hand on her forehead as the two lock eyes. The mother holds the daughter, her gaze steady and confident as the two share love and tenderness in this sacred moment. Stylized medical equipment reminds the viewer of the trial these two experience. The Māori koru design quilted into the bedspread symbolizes new beginnings for both mother and daughter.
“This piece is a tribute to the reciprocal compassion, care, tenderness, and courage shared between two people suffering during difficult experiences and the enduring connection that transcends life and death.”
