Eyre lost her father when she was 11 years old, and in her grief, she questioned the existence of a loving God. One night, consumed with sadness, she woke crying in prayer. Her oma, or grandmother, entered her bedroom and held her. “I woke up the next morning,” Eyre remembers, “certain that Heavenly Father lived and loved me, and that His Son, Jesus Christ, was my Savior, friend, and brother.” Eyre has recreated the tender scene among buildings and confusion, but a girl and her grandmother have their own sacred space, where a tree symbolizing the love of God grows next to a quiet fox.
“Everything changed because my grandmother woke up in the night to lift me, for a brief moment, up to heaven.”
