The Apostle John noted that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was present while Christ hung on the cross. Muldowney imagines the moment Christ is removed from the cross after Jesus offered His soul for the sins of the world. In this work, Mary, despite comprehending Christ’s important role in God’s plan, lifts His body to her while His hands hang down and empathetically sits in this moment of mortality. Knowing Christ’s Resurrection is impending can give hope to those viewers experiencing loss.
“[Mary’s] devotion to [Christ] was stronger than the bands of death.”
