Wood paints a scene from Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. In the novel, Bishop Myriel gives Jean Valjean silver candlesticks that Valjean had stolen from him and informs Valjean, “It is your soul that I am buying for you.” Wood has bathed the street in sunlight, indicating that this is a moment of moral awakening. In contrast to the judgmental onlookers and stern soldiers, the bishop’s compassion stands out. Wood hopes his scene can be a call to action—a call to be forgiven and to forgive.
“Just as Bishop Myriel's gesture of mercy transformed Jean Valjean, we too have the capacity to impact the lives of others profoundly.”
